NP Pelister abounds with mountain springs, streams, and two glacial lakes — Big and Small Pelister Lake — representing a rare natural phenomenon in the Balkans.
Hydrology & Hydrography
The territory of NP Pelister abounds with springs and numerous permanent and intermittent watercourses. A total of 45 springs have been recorded on the mountain, with the majority located in the Crna Reka basin (32 springs). Thirteen springs are registered within the Lake Prespa basin.
The territory of NP Pelister is crossed by numerous rivers, including the Brajčinska, Boroica, Gubišica, Drmišar, Ezerska, Zli Dol, Kriva Kobila, Kranska, Maloviška, Magarevska, Manastirska, Marušica, Mala Korija, Ržanska, Stanišar, Stara Buka, Sapundžica, Crvena, Tapo Bote, Šemnica, Caparska, and Rotinska rivers.
Among the hydrographic features of National Park Pelister, the glacial lakes are of particular significance. Vasilevski (2005) records and provides detailed data on 8 mountain lakes, consisting of 3 permanent, 3 periodic, and 2 temporary lakes.
