Beyond its natural wealth and biodiversity, National Park Pelister abounds with significant historical monuments and landmarks. They bear witness to the region’s military, cultural, and spiritual past — spanning from Antiquity, through the Middle Ages, to the First World War.
World War I Monuments
The French Military Cemetery: A Historical Link
Although not located within the park itself, this cemetery is part of the historical complex of the Bitola Front. Pelister was a key stronghold in the front’s battles from 1916 to 1918.
The Old French Road (Nižepole – Big Lake)
A road built by the French army for the strategic movement of troops towards the mountain. Today, it serves as a historical trail and hiking route.
Artillery positions and trenches on Mount Baba
On Pelister and its peaks, visible remnants of trenches, shelters, and firing positions—which formed an integral part of the battles of the Macedonian Front—can still be found.
Monuments and landmarks dedicated to the National Liberation War - NOB (Second World War)
Memorial in Kazhani Village
On August 18, the attack on the police station is commemorated, and fresh flowers are laid at the monument in honor of the fallen fighters.

Settlements & Necropolises
Numerous settlements, fortifications, and necropolises from various historical periods are located in the vicinity of Pelister.

Kale – Trnovo: Iron Age and Late Antiquity
Markova Kula – Malovište: Iron Age
Kaldararija: Ancient roads and settlements on the slopes of Pelister
Arnautski Pat – Rotino: Roman period
Bratinska Reka – Dihovo: Roman settlement
Varvara – Dihovo: Medieval necropolis
Graišta and Kućišta – Ljubojno: Roman period

Ethnographic & Architectural Heritage
Village of Malovište - Protected Monument Complex & Architectural Treasure
Malovište is the only village located inside NP Pelister, functioning as an open-air ethnological museum featuring traditional Aromanian architecture, stone houses dating back 150–200 years, and picturesque cobblestone streets.
Traditional Houses in Dihovo & Magarevo
These villages are known for their old architecture from the 19th and early 20th century, which is partially under protection.
Natural Monuments
Natural Monuments with Historical Significance
Although natural in origin, Mount Pelister is home to sites considered natural monuments with profound historical significance. The legendary Molika pine trees stand as a botanical symbol of the mountain, while the high-altitude glacial lakes—Big Lake and Small Lake—are deeply intertwined with local legends and historical accounts.
