1948 — Official Designation: Initially proclaimed as a national park covering approximately 12,500 hectares.
2007 — Park Expansion: Expanded to 17,150 hectares to protect additional vital ecosystems and natural assets.
Infrastructure Development: Construction and upgrading of mountain trails, visitor centers, and dedicated educational eco-zones for visitors and researchers.

Meaning of the Name Pelister

The name ‘Pelister’ is far more than a geographical term — it is a symbol of the nature, history, and cultural heritage of Baba Mountain. The origins of the name reflect the deep-rooted connection between humanity and nature, as well as the park’s significance in local and national identity.
There are two prominent theories regarding the name’s origin:
‘Pet-lister’ (Five-leaved): Associated with the five-needled Molika pine (Pinus peuce), which dominates the park landscape and stands as its defining symbol.
The Greek word peristeri (περιστέρι — dove): Inspired by the mountain’s silhouette, which resembles a bird when viewed from a distance.
The Molika pine (Pinus peuce) is an endemic species that characterizes the mountain and serves as an ecological emblem for the park. Thanks to this unique natural trait, the name ‘Pelister’ remains intrinsically tied to its extraordinary flora and the timeless spirit of conservation.
August Grisebach — The Botanist Associated with Pelister
The scientist who discovered the endemic Molika pine
Heinrich August Rudolf Grisebach (1814–1879) was a German botanist and phytogeographer, widely recognized as one of the founders of plant geography as an independent scientific discipline. His connection to Pelister is of profound historical and scientific significance for nature conservation in Macedonia.
In 1839, Grisebach visited Baba Mountain (Pelister) and discovered the Molika pine (Pinus peuce), an endemic species unique to the Balkans. He scientifically described and documented the tree, bringing Pelister to the attention of the international scientific community.
The discovery of the Molika pine became one of the key motivations for designating the park as Macedonia’s first national park in 1948. By documenting its flora and establishing the region’s importance for preserving rare and endemic species, Grisebach left a legacy that continues to inspire research and conservation efforts on Pelister today.
