For the first time in over three decades, Pelister National Park has launched comprehensive clearance and maintenance operations along the road connecting the Info Centre (1,350 m a.s.l.) to Lovecka House (2,000 m a.s.l.). Despite challenging weather conditions, field teams are actively clearing this 8-kilometer uncategorized mountain route.
Located within the park’s buffer zone, the road suffered from prolonged lack of maintenance in previous decades. To address this effectively, the intervention is structured in two distinct phases:
Project Phases and Timeline
- Phase One (Vegetation Management): Focused on removing weak and hazardous vegetation along the path to ensure visitor and operational safety. Scheduled for completion by July 1, 2026.
- Phase Two (Roadbed Maintenance & Drainage): Includes grading the road surface and clearing side drainage channels. Scheduled for completion by July 13, 2026.
Strategic Importance of the Route
This road serves as a critical infrastructure lifeline for the park, as it provides the sole vehicular access to Pelister’s higher altitude regions.
The route is essential for:
- Fire Protection & Emergency Response: Ensuring rapid access for firefighting equipment and personnel.
- Wildlife Monitoring & Research: Facilitating access to wildlife monitoring stations and camera trap networks.
- Ranger Patrols: Enhancing field surveillance and biodiversity enforcement by park rangers.
