As part of regular biodiversity conservation and monitoring activities, organized monitoring of the Balkan chamois was conducted in Pelister National Park. This activity was carried out in close cooperation between park employees and experts from the Macedonian Ecological Society (MES).
Expert Approach and Planned Transects
The monitoring was carried out according to internationally accepted standards, moving along pre-determined transects (trails) covering the chamois’ characteristic habitats. This method enables the precise collection of data regarding the population size, health status, and migratory movements of this protected animal.
Why Is This Monitoring Important?
The obtained results are crucial for the further management of the park and the implementation of appropriate protection measures for this noble resident of Pelister’s heights. Continuous monitoring allows us to respond on time to all potential changes within the ecosystem.
