Following intensified field patrols and conservation measures by the Pelister National Park Ranger Service, wildlife presence has significantly increased across both the Active Management Zone and the Strict Protection Zone.
This outcome is the direct result of persistent field efforts and active monitoring programs implemented with the support of the Prespa Ohrid Nature Trust (PONT).
Key Camera Trap Findings
Camera traps positioned across strategic habitats are providing essential data regarding wildlife movement, population numbers, animal health, and food chain dynamics:
- Gray Wolf (Canis lupus): Documented in its natural predatory role, carrying prey (Roe deer buck – Capreolus capreolus).
- Balkan Chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra): Confirmed on camera after an extensive period of targeted monitoring across high-altitude terrain.
- Wild Boar (Sus scrofa): Captured moving in social sounders (groups), a classic behavioral pattern for the species on Mount Baba.
- Wildcat (Felis silvestris): Frequently mistaken for the Balkan lynx by park visitors, the wildcat possesses distinct morphological traits that distinguish it from the lynx.
