In his latest appearance on the podcast “Za Sekogo Po Neshto” (Something for Everyone) by SAKAMDAKAZHAM.MK, Pelister National Park Director Ivanco Toshevski spoke openly about the challenges facing Bitola’s “green lung.” The storm last year that broke a large number of Molika pine trees serves as a “final warning” from nature regarding decades of past neglect.
Natural Species Succession and the “Battle” for Light
As a light-loving and pioneer species, the Molika pine is fighting a silent battle with fir and beech. In the lower belts (1,100–1,500 m a.s.l.), shade-tolerant species like the fir are conquering areas where there is not enough light for the Molika. However, the Molika shows incredible resilience—climbing to higher, bare and rocky areas (1,600–1,800 m a.s.l.), where entire “natural plantations” of new saplings can already be seen at the “Kopanki” ski slope.
Urgent Silvicultural Measures to Save the Forest
Forecasts from the 1969 scientific symposium are becoming reality today: the old Molika forest is in need of revitalization. With the help of expert engineers and specialists assisting for the public good, the clearing of approximately 1,000 diseased and broken trees that pose a safety risk has begun. These activities are carried out carefully and under strict scientific supervision, with the awareness that results will be visible in 15 to 20 years.

The revitalization of Pelister is not a process resolved overnight. Through well-thought-out steps, expert insight, and the involvement of the entire public, the institution remains on the path toward preserving the authentic appearance of the Balkans’ first national park.
