Pelister National Park has initiated field operations for the comprehensive maintenance and upgrading of the 19-kilometer hiking trail connecting Nizopole, Golemo Ezero (Big Lake), and Brajcino.
Scope of Trail Improvements
The project aims to enhance visitor safety and trail infrastructure across high-altitude alpine terrain through:
- Vegetation Clearing: Systematic clearing of overgrown vegetation along the entire 19 km route.
- Trail Blazing Restoration: Renewal of the standard Knafelc trail markings along the whole stretch.
- Winter Trail Marking: Installation of new winter marking poles along the section from Nizopole to Golemo Ezero (via Debel Rid).
- Wayfinding Directionals: Installation of new directional signage for Malo Ezero (Small Lake) and Pelister Peak originating from Golemo Ezero.
Operational Logistics and Partners
Fieldwork is conducted under demanding alpine conditions. Due to the rugged, high-altitude terrain, all working equipment, tools, and signage materials are manually carried by the field crews.
This initiative is implemented in collaboration with Slavkov Hiking Trails and the Mountain Climbing Federation of North Macedonia (FPSM), with financial and logistical support from the Austrian Embassy in Skopje, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Skopje, and the Embassy of the Slovak Republic in Skopje.
